What to Eat When You Have No Time to Cook
Updated 2026-10-21
The 5-minute plate formula
- Protein: rotisserie chicken, canned tuna, chickpeas or white beans, hard-boiled eggs
- Vegetables: bagged greens, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots
- Smart carb: whole-grain pita, microwavable brown rice or quinoa
- Flavor: olive oil, lemon, olives, feta or hummus
Convenience foods that are actually healthy
Rotisserie chicken, frozen vegetables, microwavable grain pouches, bagged salads, canned beans, canned tuna and salmon, jarred roasted peppers and pre-cut veggies cost a little more per pound but save the time that would otherwise go to takeout.
Recipes that barely count as cooking
- Italian Tuna & White Bean Salad: 10 minutes, no stove.
- Greek Yogurt with Honey, Figs & Walnuts: 5 minutes.
- One-Pan Shrimp Orzo: 25 minutes, one pan.
- Mezze Snack Box: assemble and go.
Let a plan do the thinking
The hardest part of "no time to cook" is usually deciding what to eat. A 7-day menu with one shopping list means the food is already in your kitchen and the decision is already made.
